Caroline approved funding for Volunteer Stipend and additional positions

Chief Jason Loftus is pleased to announce that the County Board of Supervisors has approved additional funding for the Volunteer Stipend program and additional career positions in our FY2018 budget.

This will allow our stipend funding to increase from $20,000 to $90,000. The stipend program is designed to support volunteer staffing efforts by providing nominal funding to volunteers for staffing and running calls. This nominal funding helps offset some of the personal costs associated with volunteering such as vehicle expenses, fuel, food, etc. “Volunteers are the backbone of our Caroline system. I’m optimistic that this new additional funding will help motivate additional volunteer staffing in our system” said Chief Loftus. Chief Loftus will be working with the Board to make revisions to our existing stipend policy to most effectively use these funds.

Additionally, the Board approved the hiring of three additional Firefighter/EMTs to support our system. These positions, along with the previously announced budgeted staff, will allow us to place two firefighters in both Bowling Green and Ladysmith around the clock; 24/7 coverage to bolster our volunteer staffing. The greatest call volume in the County occurs in both of these areas. This additional staffing will greatly enhance our base coverage, especially overnight. Because all career staff are cross-trained as EMS personnel as well, we will also have the availability to staff additional ambulances as call loads demand.

We are very pleased with the support provided by our County Board in both of these areas.
